Louisiana Social Work License Requirements

The Louisiana State Board of Social Work Examiners (LABSWE) issues the following social work credentials:

Registered Social Worker (RSW) – This credential allows you to engage in the basic practice of social work at an introductory generalist level. Working as an employee, you can help clients with basic things and provide general resources, information, and education.

Certified Social Worker (CSW) – You can engage in the same scope of practice as an RSW with this credential. You can apply to become a CSW when you’ve met all the requirements for becoming an LMSW except having passed a required exam. You can also engage in the practice of clinical social work in an agency under the supervision of an LCSW.

Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) – While this license doesn’t allow you to contract directly with clients, you can engage in advanced social work practice with the aim or enhancing or restoring the psychosocial and biopsychosocial functioning of individuals, families, couples, and groups. Examples of activities you can engage in with an LMSW include:

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) – This license allows you to practice clinical social work, which includes the provision of psychotherapy to individuals, families, couples, and groups. As an LCSW you can choose to engage in private and independent practice. You can provide services like:

Licensed Clinical Social Worker-Board Approved Clinical Supervisor (LCSW-BACS) – This status is given to LCSWs who’ve met specific qualifications. An LCSW-BACS is approved to provide supervision for LMSWs who are gaining experience on their way to becoming an LCSW.

Renewing Your Credential

All social work credentials issued by the LABSWE expire every year on August 31st. Renewal notices are mailed out on July 1st. To be eligible to renew your credential you need to obtain 20 hours of continuing education before June 30th. You can renew with this form and this continuing education report, or online through your account with the LABSWE where you can also upload certificates of completion to verify you’ve fulfilled the continuing education requirements. How Long Does it Take to Become a Social Worker in Louisiana?

As a high school graduate, the time you need to invest to become a social worker in Louisiana depends on the education and experience requirements you must fulfill for the credential you’re after. Earning a BSW degree usually takes four years and earning an MSW degree takes at least two years beyond that. Factoring in experience, the following is the minimum amount of time you need to invest for each credential:

Social Work Degrees in Louisiana

The LABSWE has determined that you must earn a degree from a school that’s accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) to meet the education requirement for any credential. Currently in Louisiana there are 13 such programs, including three that are offered online.

Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work (BSW)

Right now you can find eight CSWE-accredited BSW programs in Louisiana, including one that is offered online. Graduating from one of these programs qualifies you to become an RSW, meaning you can be practicing in the field of social work just four years out of high school. Earning a BSW is a natural step towards enrolling in an MSW, which will qualify your for more advanced levels of social work practice.

Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW)

Graduating with an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program fulfills the education requirement for all types of social work credentials in the state. Right now there are five such programs in Louisiana, including two that are offered online. As part of being CSWE-accredited, the MSW program automatically includes a field education experience that’s at least 900 hours.

Doctoral Degree in Social Work

While the CSWE doesn’t accredit programs at the doctoral level, you can still earn a PhD in Social Work or a Doctor of Social Work (DSW) to help advance your career’s prospects and achieve the highest level of education possible in this field. DSW programs can focus on clinical aspects of social work and may take slightly less time to complete than PhD programs, which can be more focused on research.

Louisiana maintains reciprocity agreements with states that have comparable credentialing requirements, and where no agreements exist the board may still grant credentials via endorsement if the out-of-state credential had similar requirements to Louisiana’s. Recovery School District – There is an education crisis of under-performing schools in Louisiana, especially in the New Orleans area, and RSD is one of several organizations stepping up to meet this challenge. As the local public school system has been steadily replaced by charter schools, RSD has been one of the leaders of this trend, with 52 charter schools under its umbrella by a recent count. Eastern Louisiana Mental Health System – This integrated system of mental health care offers residential options, outpatient services, and 470 in-patient beds. It’s a major provider of mental health services in the Baton Rouge area. Patients are assigned a team to address their needs, including social, rehabilitation, and addiction services.

LCMC Health – Based out of New Orleans, this non-profit health system operates five hospitals and numerous acute care clinics and urgent care centers. Its staff is over 9,000-strong, including more than 2,200 physicians, and they are bolstered by nearly 2,500 volunteers. This organization believes in whole-patient treatment, which means they don’t overlook mental health or emotional well-being.

Adult and Teen Challenge – Filling an important role in addressing drug and alcohol addiction, this organization operates eight residential centers throughout the state where men, women, and women with children can come to get clean and address their underlying issues. It’s proud of its 86 percent success rate and recognizes there is a long road ahead.

Jefferson Parish Public Schools – Serving both banks of the Mississippi with 80 schools where around 50,000 kids attend classes daily, this school district is the largest in the state and ranks among the hundred largest in the nation.
